THE MACKLIN LANEWAY HOUSE - VANCOUVER
Our clients came to us looking to expand their multi-generational living on their lot in Vancouver. We took advantage of the large lot size & designed a one level laneway house that allowed us to maximize the largest allowable footprint. We were able to provide 2 bedrooms, a den, 2 full bathrooms, & an open concept kitchen, dining, & living room with a separate mechanical closet. Features of this laneway home include heating & cooling from a high efficient ducted heat pump, with the interior air handler strategically placed in a drop ceiling of the den (below the insulation & air barrier), which allowed for the running of ducting, fire suppression, heat recovery ventilation, & lighting throughout.
The clients had an emphasis on the practical use of space with a clean, timeless, minimalistic (but still warm & cozy) design aesthetic. We wanted to ensure they had ample natural light by incorporating high vaulted ceilings in the main living space/primary bedroom, large skylights, & installed a large folding door unit (with bug screen) to bring the outdoors in. We utilized every inch of space with custom millwork and built-ins for storage including an in-suite laundry closet & tall pantries. As our clients cook often, we included a long quartz top island with an additional prep sink, & a drop down dining area with built-in accessories. The exterior of the laneway house features triple paned vinyl windows, & is clad with painted James Hardie board with J-channels. The flat roof includes a 28 gauge metal facia in iron ore to match the accent paint colour seen on the painted soffits & throughout the home.
